Obituary for Gary A Peterson

Gary A Peterson
GARY PETERSON, 66

Gary Peterson has completed his journey through this life on January 31, 2017. He passed away quickly, in Melbourne, Florida; on his way to see A Dog's Purpose. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday, February 10 at the Riverview Park, Vietnam War Memorial in Sebastian, Florida. Please arrive at 9:45am as Gary will be recognized for his military service with Honor Guard presentations at 10:00am. Please come dressed comfortably.

Gary was born August 23, 1950 in Wadena, Minnesota to Fred and Frances (South) Peterson. He grew up on the family farm in Wadena until around 1960. His family moved to Minneapolis, where he lived until he joined the Marine Corps. He met his future wife Corporal Nancy Thompson and had one son in 1971. Gary was a foreman at the Minneapolis Star Tribune for 30 years, lived in Somerset, Wisconsin for 37 years; where he was a Police Officer, and retired to Florida to spend time with his granddaughter and get away from the cold.

Gary is preceded by his parents and loving brother, Micheal Peterson. Gary is survived by his wife of 46 years, Nancy Peterson. He had great love for her, leaving behind instructions for her to live life to the fullest and not to follow him anytime soon. He is also survived by his son, Rolf Peterson and daughter-in-law, Marcela Peterson, a Granddaughter he was very proud of and enjoyed spending time with, Larissa Peterson, his Goddaughter, Danielle Dickson. Also, his sister Pamela (Peterson) Yager and her husband Thomas Yager, and a multitude of brother and sister-in-laws: Bill and Laurie Thompson, Jim and Linda Thompson, Nik and Jane (Thompson) Karaguleff, Paul and Mary (Thompson) Sharkey, Joe and Marilee Thompson, Frank and Tracy Thompson, John and Shelly Thompson, Mike and Kim Thompson. Not to forget his numerous nephews and nieces and all of the friends he made around the world.

Gary lived an active life with many interests. He started studying Martial Arts with Nancy and Rolf in 1985. He earned his 5th degree Black Belt in US Chuan Fa and was inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame, March 31st, 2007 in Richmond, Indiana. Gary enjoyed travelling, often taking Nancy and Rolf around the Caribbean, Mexico, Florida, or going on family cruises. He and his son went scuba diving on several trips and are some of Rolf’s favorite moments. Gary enjoyed watching Bob Ross videos and emulating his painting style. Many of Gary’s friends and family have his paintings hanging in their homes. If you enjoyed spicy foods, Gary knew how to spice up anything. He was always open to having people try his “Green Death” salsa...many politely declined. He also enjoyed gardening, deer hunting, fishing, and going to the flea market with Nancy.

Gary was a generous man who considered many to be close family. He could make friends anywhere, having the natural ability to bring up conversation about a variety of interesting subjects.

Gary had a lifelong love of dogs. To honor his memory; in lieu of flowers or any giftings, we know he would appreciate friends and family to donate to their local dog shelter or adopt a dog in need.

Gary has moved on to the next great Adventure where his many dogs should be happy to see him again. When Maddie is ready, we will send her up to you. You will be dearly missed. May you Rest in Peace.
